Overview
Some of the most common pediatric gastrointestinal conditions we treat at CMC include:
- Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD): This is a condition in which stomach acid flows back up into the esophagus, causing heartburn, regurgitation, and difficulty swallowing.
- Constipation: Constipation is a common problem among children, especially those who are picky eaters or do not consume enough fiber. It can cause abdominal pain, bloating, and discomfort.
- Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD): IBD is a chronic condition that causes inflammation in the digestive tract. The two main types of IBD are Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis.
- Celiac disease: Celiac disease is an autoimmune disorder in which the immune system reacts to gluten, a protein found in wheat, barley, and rye. This reaction can cause damage to the small intestine, leading to malabsorption of nutrients and other symptoms.
- Food allergies and intolerances: Some children may be allergic or intolerant to certain foods, such as milk, eggs, or peanuts. These allergies and intolerances can cause a range of symptoms, from hives and itching to nausea and vomiting.
Pediatric Gastroenterology Treatments Include:
- Medications: Medications such as proton pump inhibitors, laxatives, and anti-inflammatory drugs may be prescribed to manage symptoms and treat underlying conditions
- Dietary changes
- Endoscopy: At CMC we have a pediatric endoscopy subspecialist. And endoscopy is a procedure in which a thin, flexible tube with a camera is inserted through the mouth to examine the digestive tract. This procedure may be used to diagnose and treat specific GI conditions.
- Surgery: In some cases, surgery may be necessary to treat pediatric GI conditions, such as inflammatory bowel disease or congenital anomalies.
