Phyllodes Tumor

At Clemenceau Medical Center Hospital Dubai, our Breast Care Unit provides expert diagnosis and treatment for Phyllodes Tumors, a rare type of breast tumor that develops in the connective tissue of the breast. While most phyllodes tumors are benign (non-cancerous), some can be borderline or malignant, which is why accurate diagnosis and timely treatment are essential.

Phyllodes Tumour

Phyllodes tumours are swellings in the connective tissue of the breast; this is the structural support tissue which gives the breast it’s shape. Most Phyllodes tumours are benign (non-cancerous) and do not cause any problems in the longer term. Rarely, the tumours may have the potential to turn cancerous (borderline) or may present as a cancerous lump (malignant). The different types of Phyllodes tumour are diagnosed by taking a small tissue sample (see Breast Tissue Biopsy).

The name Phyllodes comes from the Greek work for leaf (phyllon), as the tissue has a leaf like pattern when looked at under a microscope.

What are the symptoms of a Phyllodes Tumour?

A Phyllodes tumour usually presents as a firm rubbery lump in the breast, although it may be seen on breast imaging. Sometimes, the lump can grow rapidly and this is more suspicious of a malignant Phyllodes Tumour.

How is a Phyllodes Tumour diagnosed and treated?

A Phyllodes Tumour is usually diagnosed on a breast tissue biopsy, but it can sometimes be difficult to tell the difference between it and a fibroadenoma with only a small amount of tissue. If this is the case, excision of the whole lump is recommended. Any further tests or treatment is determined by the excision findings.

If the breast tissue biopsy confirms the diagnosis of a Phyllodes Tumour, it is recommended to remove it, even if it is benign, as it can grow quickly and removes any chance of it becoming malignant in the future.

In the rare cases of a diagnosis of a borderline or malignant Phyllodes Tumour, other treatments, such as radiation therapy or chemotherapy, may be recommended for you. Your Healthcare Provider will be able to guide you on what is recommended for you.

FAQ's
Is a Phyllodes Tumor cancerous?
Phyllodes Tumors may be benign (non-cancerous), borderline, or malignant (cancerous). Most cases are benign, but malignant ones require advanced treatment and careful follow-up.
How can I tell if I have a Phyllodes Tumor?
The most common symptom is a painless, rapidly growing lump in the breast. Diagnosis requires imaging such as a mammogram, ultrasound, or MRI, along with a biopsy.
How quickly do Phyllodes Tumors grow?
They usually grow very fast, sometimes increasing in size within weeks to months. That’s why early consultation with a breast specialist is important.
What is the best treatment for Phyllodes Tumors?
The standard treatment is surgical removal with clear margins. This may involve a lumpectomy for smaller tumors or mastectomy for larger or recurrent ones.
