Liver Tests & Diagnosis at CMC Dubai
Liver function tests (LFTs) are blood tests that are used to assess the health of your liver and diagnose liver disease. There are several different types of liver function tests, and your doctor may order one or more of these tests depending on your specific symptoms and medical history.
Overview
Some of the most common liver function tests conducted at the CMC Liver Disease Treatment Clinic include:
- Alanine aminotransferase (ALT) and aspartate aminotransferase (AST): These are enzymes that are normally present in liver cells. Elevated levels of ALT and AST in the blood may indicate liver damage or disease.
- Alkaline phosphatase (ALP): This enzyme is found in bile ducts, bone, and placenta. High levels of ALP in the blood can indicate liver disease, gallbladder disease, or bone disorders.
- Bilirubin: This is a waste product produced by the liver when it breaks down old red blood cells. High levels of bilirubin in the blood can indicate liver disease or other conditions that affect the liver’s ability to remove bilirubin from the blood.
- Albumin and total protein: These are proteins produced by the liver. Low levels of these proteins in the blood may indicate liver disease.
- Prothrombin time (PT): This test measures how long it takes for your blood to clot. The liver produces proteins that are necessary for blood clotting, so an abnormal PT can indicate liver disease.
In addition to these tests, your doctor may order additional imaging studies, such as an ultrasound or MRI of the liver, to evaluate the extent of liver damage and diagnose specific liver diseases.
The diagnosis of liver disease typically involves a combination of medical history, physical examination, and laboratory and imaging tests. Some of the most common diagnostic tests for liver disease include:
- Liver function tests (LFTs): As mentioned before, LFTs are blood tests that measure levels of enzymes, proteins, and waste products in the blood that are produced by the liver. Elevated levels of certain enzymes or bilirubin may indicate liver damage or disease.
- Imaging studies: Imaging studies, such as ultrasound, CT scan, or MRI, can be used to visualize the liver and assess for signs of liver disease, such as inflammation, scarring, or tumors.
- Biopsy: A liver biopsy involves the removal of a small sample of liver tissue, which is then examined under a microscope to look for signs of disease, inflammation, or scarring.
- Serology tests: Serology tests can be used to diagnose viral hepatitis or autoimmune liver diseases by detecting antibodies or viral particles in the blood.
- Genetic testing: Genetic testing can be used to diagnose inherited liver diseases, such as Wilson’s disease or hemochromatosis.
It is important to note that liver disease can be asymptomatic in its early stages, and that some liver diseases, such as fatty liver disease, can only be diagnosed with imaging or biopsy. It is important to speak with your healthcare provider if you have any concerns about your liver health, or if you have risk factors for liver disease, such as heavy alcohol use or a family history of liver disease.
