Breast Reconstruction 

Breast reconstruction involves recreating the breast shape after mastectomy. It can be done at the same time as the mastectomy (immediate) or as part of a subsequent surgery (delayed): 

The commonest techniques used to reconstruct the breast are: 

Implant based reconstruction involves placing a silicone implant into the space under the skin on the chest wall to create the breast shape. The implant may be placed on top of or under the muscle. Sometimes, the Surgeon will recommend a tissue expander, which is inflated with saline over time in the clinic and replaced at a second operation. 

Flap based reconstruction involves taking tissue from elsewhere in your body (known as autologous tissue) and using it to recreate the breast shape. The commonest arear used is the lower abdomen (belly), although tissue from the thigh, bottom or back can be used. A free flap involves removing the tissue from your body entirely and reconnecting it to blood vessels in your chest wall, whilst a pedicle flap keeps it’s own blood supply as it is moved to the breast area. 

Breast reconstruction is a process and rarely involves a single operation. Secondary procedures, such as lipofilling, nipple reconstruction and nipple tattooing, may be needed to enhance the longer term outcome.
