Cardiac Nuclear Scan

A cardiac nuclear scan is a safe, non-invasive diagnostic test that measures blood flow to your heart while at rest and during physical activity. This test helps doctors detect heart problems, evaluate heart muscle function, and guide treatment plans.

  Overview

Cardiac Nuclear Scan

A cardiac nuclear scan is an advanced imaging test that evaluates how well blood flows through your heart and how effectively your heart muscle is functioning. By using a small, safe amount of radioactive tracer, doctors can identify areas of reduced blood flow, damaged heart tissue, or abnormal heart function. This test is commonly used for patients with chest pain, heart disease, or abnormal cardiac test results and helps physicians plan accurate and effective heart treatments.

Why You May Need a Cardiac Nuclear Scan?

This test may be recommended if you:

  • Have heart disease.
  • Have had abnormal lab results or previous heart imaging.
  • Have undergone heart surgery or angioplasty (balloon procedure for blocked arteries).
  • Experience chest pain or shortness of breath.

Early detection and monitoring with a nuclear scan can help prevent complications and improve heart health outcomes.

How a Cardiac Nuclear Scan Works?
During the test:
  1. A radioactive tracer is injected into your bloodstream.
  2. The tracer travels to your heart.
  3. A special imaging device measures how much tracer reaches different areas of your heart, showing blood flow and heart muscle function.
  4. The procedure typically takes 2–4 hours and may include a stress test.
Stress Test Options:
  • Exercise Stress Test: You walk on a treadmill or cycle on a stationary bike while your heart activity is monitored with an ECG and your blood pressure is checked.
  • Medication-Induced Stress Test: If you cannot exercise, medicines are given to increase blood flow to your heart, simulating the effects of exercise.

Preparing For The Procedure?
  • Follow your doctor’s instructions regarding medications, especially diabetes drugs or blood thinners.
  • Fast for at least 6 hours before the test.
  • Remove jewelry and wear comfortable clothing.
  • Inform your healthcare provider about:
    • Allergies or reactions to medicines
    • Current medications and supplements
    • Blood disorders or prior surgeries
    • Medical conditions and pregnancy status.
During The Procedure?
  • An IV line will be inserted to administer the radioactive tracer.
  • You will rest on an exam table while your heart is monitored using an ECG.
  • Images of your heart will be captured, usually for 15–20 minutes.
  • If a stress test is performed, the tracer may be injected again after your heart has peaked in activity.
  • Depending on the tracer, scans may be repeated 3–4 hours later.
  • The IV line will be removed after the procedure is complete.
After The Procedure?
  • Resume your normal diet, medications, and activities unless your doctor advises otherwise.
  • Increase fluid intake to help flush the tracer from your body; aim for urine to remain pale yellow.
  • Ask your healthcare provider:
    • When will your results be ready?
    • How will the results be delivered?
Risk & Considerations

A cardiac nuclear scan is generally safe. Potential risks include:

  • Temporary chest pain or rapid heartbeat during a stress test
  • Warm sensation in your chest (usually brief)
  • Allergic reaction to the tracer (rare).
Benefits of a Cardiac Nuclear Scan
  • Provides detailed images of heart blood flow
  • Detects areas of poor blood supply or abnormal heart muscle function
  • Helps doctors diagnose heart conditions early
  • Guides treatment plans for heart disease and arrhythmias.
