Breast MRI in Dubai

At Clemenceau Medical Center Hospital Dubai, we offer advanced Breast MRI (Magnetic Resonance Imaging) services to provide detailed imaging of breast tissue using powerful magnets and radio waves. Unlike mammograms or ultrasounds, a breast MRI does not use radiation and gives highly accurate, three-dimensional images—making it a crucial tool for the early detection and diagnosis of breast cancer and other breast conditions.

Breast Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI)

Breast Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) is a type of imaging that does not use x-rays to take pictures of the breast. It takes detailed images using a magnet, radio waves and a computer. It may be recommended with mammography to obtain more information, to evaluate dense breast tissue, or in younger women who carry a genetic mutation putting them at a higher risk of developing breast cancer. It can also provide further information regarding the extent of disease in someone with a diagnosis of breast cancer.

What is the Preparation for a Breast MR Scan?

Before your Breast MRI scan, it is important to tell your Healthcare Professional if you

  • Are pregnant or breast feeding
  • If you have any metal in your body, such as a pacemaker/defibrillator, insulin pump, surgical clips or metal fragments in your eyes. If you are unsure, it is always best to check with your Healthcare Provider before you have the scan.
  • Are unable to lie on your stomach for 30 minutes
  • Have had an allergic reaction to contrast dye on the past
  • Have a fear of enclosed spaces (claustrophobia). Your Healthcare Provider can advise you on whether a tablet sedative may be prescribed for you.

What Happens During a Breast MR Scan?

Once you arrive, you will be welcomed at the reception desk where you check-in and complete a questionnaire. You will then go through to the Breast unit where you will be given a gown to change into. You will need to remove all metal and the Technician will guide you on where to put your things.

A small canula (tube) will be placed into a vein to allow access to give the intravenous contrast (dye) needed for the scan. You will lie down on the table that has openings for your breasts. You will need to stay still for about 30 minutes, so please tell the Technician of you are not in a comfortable position. The Technician will be able to see and talk to you from another room. There will be loud banging noises during the scan, but it is important for you to stay as still as possible to ensure high quality images are created. You will be given earplugs to help reduce the noise. Once the test is complete, the technician will remove the canula and place a bandage on the site.

What Happens After a Breast MR Scan?

You will be able to continue with normal activities after the scan. If you took a sedative before your scan, you will need someone to drive you home.

The breast magnetic resonance images will be reviewed by our female Consultant Breast Radiologist and a report will be issued. It is quite common to need a follow up, known as a second-look, breast ultrasound scan after a Breast MRI scan as it is a highly sensitive. The report will be available to your referring Physician, who will discuss the results with you.

FAQ's
What is a breast MRI?
A breast MRI (Magnetic Resonance Imaging) is a highly detailed imaging test that uses magnets and radio waves (not X-rays) to create clear pictures of the breast tissue. It is often used alongside mammography and ultrasound for more accurate breast cancer detection.
Why is a breast MRI done?
Doctors may recommend a breast MRI for:

Screening women at high risk of breast cancer

Further evaluating abnormalities found on mammogram or ultrasound

Checking the extent of breast cancer

Monitoring response to treatment

Evaluating breast implants for rupture or complications
Who should have a breast MRI?
A breast MRI is especially recommended for:

Women with a strong family history of breast cancer

Women with BRCA1 or BRCA2 gene mutations

Women with dense breast tissue

Patients already diagnosed with breast cancer (to check spread)

Women with breast implants requiring detailed evaluation
Is breast MRI better than mammography?
Breast MRI is more sensitive than mammography and can detect cancers that mammograms might miss, particularly in women with dense breasts. However, it is usually used in combination with mammography, not as a replacement.
