Overview
Hypothyroidism is a common condition in which the thyroid gland does not produce enough thyroid hormones, which are important for regulating the body’s metabolism. Here’s a breakdown of the symptoms, causes, and treatments of hypothyroidism:
Hypothyroidism Symptoms
- Fatigue and weakness
- Weight gain or difficulty losing weight
- Cold intolerance
- Dry skin and hair
- Constipation
- Depression
- Memory problems
- Menstrual irregularities
- Muscle aches and joint pain
Hypothyroidism Causes
The most common cause of hypothyroidism is an autoimmune disorder called Hashimoto’s thyroiditis, in which the immune system attacks the thyroid gland.
Other causes may include:
- Thyroid surgery or radiation therapy
- Iodine deficiency
- Certain medications
- Congenital defects.
Hypothyroidism Treatments
The primary treatment for hypothyroidism is hormone replacement therapy, in which synthetic thyroid hormones are taken orally to replace the hormones that the thyroid gland is not producing. This therapy is usually lifelong, and regular blood tests are needed to monitor hormone levels and adjust the dosage as needed.
In addition to medication other treatments suggested may include:
- Healthy diet,
- Regular exercise
- Stress management
- Surgery ( in some cases) for enlarged thyroids, to remove a portion of the thyroid gland.
