Overview
What are the indications for having Breast Ultrasound?
Breast ultrasound scans are used alone or to complement mammography findings and/or breast Magnetic Resonance (MR) findings. As there is no radiation, it is safe to have breast ultrasound scans when you are pregnant.
A doctor may recommend a breast ultrasound for the following reasons:
- To assess a clinical concern detected on clinical examination by yourself or your Doctor
- To check if a breast lump is a fluid-filled breast cyst (usually not cancerous) or a solid lump (this may require further testing)
- To assess dense breast tissue as defined on mammography
- To investigate a focal area in the breast that appeared different on a mammogram or magnetic resonance (MR) imaging
- To examine the breast tissue in pregnancy in conjunction with a clinical examination
- For the purpose of guiding a needle into a mass to collect sample tissue for biopsy

What is the Preparation for a Breast Ultrasound Scan?
On the day of the test, please avoid using any deodorant, powders, lotions, creams, or perfumes in your armpits as this can interfere with the interpretation of the breast imaging. Be sure to pop it in your bag though, so you can put it on as soon as you finish the test.
What Happens During a Breast Ultrasound Scan?
Once you arrive, you will be welcomed at the reception desk where you check-in and complete a questionnaire. You will then go through to the Breast unit where you will be given a gown to change into. You will need to remove any necklaces and clothing from the waist up.
During the procedure, you will lie on your back on the examination couch. Our female Consultant Breast Radiologist will apply warmed, water-based gel to your skin and use a wand, called a transducer, over the skin on and around the breast to ensure that the area is thoroughly assessed. The procedure usually takes about 10 minutes to allow for the images to be taken, stored and reviewed.
What Happens After a Breast Ultrasound Scan?
The breast ultrasound images will be reviewed by our female Consultant Breast Radiologist and a report will be issued. This will be available to your referring Physician, who will discuss the results with you.
