Overview
Cystic Kidney Disease
Cystic Kidney Disease (CKD) is an inherited disorder in which the kidneys become filled with multiple cysts, or sacs of fluid. The disease is caused by abnormal development of the collecting ducts in the kidney, and it affects about 1 in every 1000 people.
The symptoms of CKD are often quite mild, and can include:
- Decrease in urine output
- Back pain,
- Feeling of being constantly tired
Over time, these symptoms can become more severe, and can include difficulty breathing, nausea, and vomiting.
Polycystic Kidney Disease
Polycystic Kidney Disease (PKD) is another inherited disorder, and it is the most common cause of chronic kidney disease in adults. In PKD, the kidneys become filled with multiple cysts, which can lead to renal failure and other complications. Unlike CKD, PKD is caused by a gene mutation, which leads to the formation of multiple cysts.
The signs and symptoms of PKD are typically more severe than those of CKD, and they include:
- High blood pressure,
- Back pain
- Headaches,
- Blood in the urine.
Over time, the cysts can grow large enough to press on organs and interfere with kidney function.
Treatment for Cystic & Polycystic Kidney Disease
The treatment for CKD and PKD can vary depending on the severity of the disease, but it typically involves lifestyle changes, medications, and potential surgery.
Lifestyle changes such as eating a balanced diet, drinking plenty of water, and exercising regularly can help to manage symptoms of both diseases and reduce the risk of complications. Medications such as diuretics and ACE inhibitors can be used to reduce swelling and improve kidney function.
In cases where the cysts are causing serious complications, surgery may be necessary to remove the cysts or to repair any damage that may have occurred. Both CKD and PKD are relatively rare but can have serious complications which is why it’s important to take steps to manage the disease.
