The Rezum procedure is a non-surgical minimally invasive advanced technique used to treat benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH), also known as enlarged prostate. The procedure uses sterilised water vapor to remove any blockage in the prostate allowing for improved flow of urine.
During the procedure, a special instrument with a portable radiofrequency generator, a telescopic lens, an inductive coil, and a delivery device that is inserted into the urethra is used.
Using the machine, water vapor or steam is injected into the enlarged areas of the prostate into the delivery tube, which has been inserted into the urethra.
On activation by the doctor, the inductive coil in the instrument is heated by energy from the radiofrequency generator. The coil in turn heats the sterile water to form steam at room temperature.
Using the telescopic lens as a guide, the doctor injects the steam (delivered through the tube in the urethra) into the targeted prostate tissue. This causes the cells on the tissue to die. The body’s natural healing process then gets rid of the dead cells allowing the prostate to decrease in size and in turn stop obstructing the urethra.
A catheter is then inserted into the urethra (to drain the urine) as the healing takes place, after which it is removed.

In the first few days after surgery, there may be more urinary discomfort, including frequent urination, increased urgency to urinate, pain when urinating, and even blood in the urine. These side effects diminish as the treated area continues to heal over time.
After the treatment, the symptoms reduce within a few weeks with further improvement within two to three months. The treatment can be repeated if the symptoms return in future.
