Thyroid Nodules Treatment & Thyroid Nodules Surgery in Dubai

Thyroid Nodules Treatment in Dubai at CMC Hospital

Thyroid nodules are small or large lumps that develop in the thyroid gland, which is located at the base of the neck, below the Adam’s apple. These nodules are common and are usually benign (non-cancerous), but in some cases, they can be malignant (cancerous). At CMC we offer conservative, minimally invasive thyroid nodule treatment, and advanced thyroid nodule surgery if indicated.

Thyroid Nodules Symptoms

Many thyroid nodules are asymptomatic and are discovered incidentally during routine physical examinations or imaging studies for other conditions. However, some nodules may cause symptoms including:

  • A lump or swelling in the neck that may be visible or palpable
  • Difficulty swallowing or a feeling of a lump in the throat
  • Hoarseness or voice changes
  • Neck pain or discomfort
  • Enlarged thyroid gland (goiter)

Thyroid Nodules Causes

The exact cause of thyroid nodules is not known, but several factors can increase the risk of developing nodules, including:

  • Iodine deficiency – Iodine is an essential mineral required for the production of thyroid hormones. A deficiency of iodine can cause an enlarged thyroid gland and the development of nodules
  • Age – Thyroid nodules are more likely to occur as you age
  • Gender – Thyroid nodules are more common in women more likely to occur as people age
  • Genetics – Certain genetic mutations can increase the risk of developing thyroid nodules and thyroid cancer
  • Radiation exposure – Exposure to radiation, particularly in childhood, can increase the risk of developing thyroid nodules and cancer.
  • Thyroid disease – People with an overactive thyroid gland (hyperthyroidism) or an underactive thyroid gland (hypothyroidism) are at an increased risk of developing nodules

Thyroid Nodule Treatments

The treatment for thyroid nodules ranges from conservative to surgical and depends on several factors, including the size and location of the nodule, whether it is benign or malignant, and whether it is causing symptoms.

If the doctor suspects that the nodule may be cancerous, they may perform a fine-needle aspiration biopsy to collect a sample of cells from the nodule and examine them under a microscope.

Treament options include:

  • Wait and monitor – In many cases, small thyroid nodules that are not causing any symptoms or are benign may not require any treatment, you may be recommended regular monitoring to detect any changes in size or appearance.
  • Hormone therapy – If the thyroid nodule is causing hyperthyroidism, the doctor may prescribe medication to suppress the production of thyroid hormones.
  • Radioactive iodine therapy: In some cases, radioactive iodine may be used to shrink thyroid nodules.
  • Surgery: If the thyroid nodule is large, causing symptoms, or there is a suspicion of malignancy, the doctor may recommend surgery to remove the nodule or the entire thyroid gland. At CMC Dubai we offer the most precise robotic thyroid surgery, resulting in more precise surgery, and faster recovery.

After treatment, regular monitoring may be necessary to ensure that the nodule does not recur or that the cancer has not spread.
