The procedure, which is performed under general anesthesia, takes approximately 3 to 4 hours. Small incisions are made near the patient’s belly button. The surgeon inflates the belly with gas (carbon dioxide). This will help him/her get a better view of the surgical site.
The robotically assisted laparoscope and other surgical instruments are inserted into the patient’s abdomen through incisions. Then the surgeon attaches the laparoscope and the other instruments to the robotic arms of the computer. At the console (control area), the surgeon will remotely control the surgery.
The patient’s uterus will be cut into fine pieces that can be easily removed through small incisions. Depending on the nature of the hysterectomy, the whole uterus may be removed or just the part above the cervix.
Upon completion of the surgery, the incisions are closed with 1 or 2 sutures then covered with small dressings.
Prior to the procedure, the surgeon might recommend that the patient undergoes some tests such as blood tests, a chest X-ray, or an electrocardiogram (ECG) to check her general health.
The patient has to inform her surgeon of any medication she may be taking at home including herbal medications and other over-the-counter medications. The patient is also instructed to stay nil-by-mouth at least 6 hours before the surgery.
