Robotic Excision of Endometriosis in Dubai at CMC Hospital

Robotic excision of endometriosis is a minimally invasive, fertility-sparing procedure used in the treatment of endometriosis, and at CMC Dubai we utilize a robot called the da Vinci Robotic System. The procedure uses small incisions instead of large abdominal incisions. This makes it less invasive than conventional methods of endometriosis surgery.

CMC Dubai is one of the few hospital facilities offering Robotic Endometriosis Treatment. Our surgeries are performed by US Board Certified OBGYN’s that have years of experience conducting robotically assisted excision of endometriosis.

Endometriosis is a condition that occurs when tissue that resembles and acts like endometrial tissue develops outside of the uterus. Endometrial implants are tissues that remain after the monthly cycle, and they continue to thicken and grow inside the pelvic cavity.

Patient Story: Young lady suffering from pelvic pain for over 6 months

Ideal Candidate for Robotic Excision of Endometriosis

Most patients with endometriosis are suitable candidates for robotic surgery. However, the following conditions may reduce one’s candidacy for the procedure:

  • A patient with a bleeding disorder that puts her at risk during surgery
  • Inability to have general anesthesia
  • Not being a candidate for laparoscopic surgery
  • Having substantial scar tissue or other issues that obstruct the ability to see the treatment area clearly

The Procedure

This procedure is performed using the da Vinci Robotic Surgery System which is a surgical assistance tool that enables the surgeon to perform the surgery using computer-guided, magnified 3D visualization.

During the procedure, the surgeon will make up to 5 small incisions in the patient’s abdomen. A laparoscope, which is a thin scope with a camera and small surgical instruments attached to the robotic arm are inserted through the abdominal incisions. Images of the surgical site (exterior of the uterus and surrounding anatomy) are projected on a screen in a control room.

The surgeon sits at the console and remotely controls the instruments via the robotic arms to remove the abnormal endometrial implants and lesions from the pelvic cavity.

Upon completion of the procedure, the surgeon withdraws the surgical instruments and sutures the incisions.

What to Expect After Robotic Excision of Endometriosis

After the procedure, majority of patients are able to return home the same day since the procedure is minimally invasive. Patients will have a shorter recovery time, and minimal pain and scarring compared to conventional surgeries.

Benefits of the Procedure

Endometriosis surgery using robotic assistance offers various benefits. Some of these advantages are immediate while others are indirect but just as effective. They include:

  • The surgery is minimally invasive
  • Shorter recovery time
  • Minimal scarring
  • Improved visualization due to high-resolution magnified image
  • Minimal pain and discomfort during recovery
  • Reduced risk of infection

Possible Risks Associated with Robotic Surgery

There are possible risks associated with every medical procedure. However, the robot allows our physicians to be more precise to ensure any possibility of complications are reduced.
