Diagnostic hysteroscopy is a minimally invasive procedure that uses a thin, lighted tube called a hysteroscope to examine the inside of the uterus. Hysteroscopic myomectomy is a minimally invasive surgical procedure that removes uterine fibroids through the vagina and cervix using a hysteroscope.

Diagnostic Hysteroscopy Procedure

• Diagnostic hysteroscopy is typically performed in an outpatient setting under local anesthesia. The patient will be positioned on an examination table with her feet in stirrups. The vaginal area will be cleaned with an antiseptic solution. The physician will then insert the hysteroscope through the vagina and into the uterus. A liquid or gas may be used to expand the uterus for a better view. The physician will examine the lining of the uterus and the openings of the fallopian tubes. If a biopsy or other procedure is done, small tools will be passed through the hysteroscope.
• Hysteroscopic myomectomy is also typically performed in an outpatient setting under local or general anesthesia. The procedure is similar to diagnostic hysteroscopy, but the physician will also remove any fibroids that are found.

Diagnostic Hysteroscopy Recovery Time

The recovery time for diagnostic hysteroscopy is typically short. Most patients can go home the same day. Some patients may experience mild cramping or bleeding for a few days after the procedure.
