Pre-Operative assessment before cataract surgery is of paramount importance and typically include assessing the patient’s ocular and overall health, to ensure patient is fit to undergo surgery. This includes

Medical and Surgical History: It is important to identify any pre-existing conditions or medications that could affect the outcome of surgery or anesthesia. Any prior ocular surgery like cornea or lens based refractive surgery has a bearing on the final outcome of surgery.

Eye Examination: Along with vision and intraocular pressure measurements , a detailed anterior and a dilated posterior segment examination is essential to predict the difficulties during the surgery and outcome of it.

Biometry: is measuring the axial length and curvature of the cornea to calculate the appropriate power of the IOL accurately using various mathematical formulae integrated in optical or ultrasound based biometers.

Corneal Topography: Evaluating the cornea’s shape to detect irregularities that might impact surgical planning and outcome.

Anesthesia Fitness: though cataract surgery can be done under topical or local anesthesia, it’s still recommended to obtain a fitness for general anesthesia. This includes a thorough check up of cardiovascular and lung functions.

Laboratory Tests: a complete blood work is done to rule out conditions that can have an impact on the safety and outcome of the surgery i.e. diabetes

Informed Consent: Discussing the procedure, potential risks, and obtaining the patient’s informed consent
