Dr Maya Barake is an endocrinologist trained in the evaluation and management of general endocrine disorders, including diabetes, lipid abnormalities, adrenal and thyroid diseases and hormonal reproductive disorders. She holds, as well, specialized international training and certification in the management of obesity, pituitary diseases and osteoporosis.
Dr Barake pursued her undergraduate studies and medical school at the American University of Beirut, Lebanon. She then did her internal medicine residency and endocrinology fellowship at the American University of Beirut, Medical Center, after which she completed a one-year specialized fellowship in Pituitary Disorders at the Neuroendocrine Clinical Center, Massachusetts General Hospital, Harvard Medical School. In return to Lebanon, she pursued a Masters Degree in Health Research at the American University of Beirut Scholars in Health Research Program.
During her training, Dr.Barake received several awards, among which the Endocrinology Excellence Award in Research for 2 consecutive years. In 2010, she was elected to the prestigious Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Medical Society. Dr.Barake is certified in Endocrinology & Diabetes by the Royal College of Physicians, UK. She holds as well an international certification in the evaluation of bone densitometry by the International Society of Clinical Densitometry and an international certification in the management of obesity by the Strategic Centre for Obesity Professional Education of the World Obesity Federation.
In parallel to her clinical practice in Endocrinology, Dr.Barake holds several key positions in international and lebanese medical societies. She is a founding member of the Gulf & Lebanon steering committee of the World Obesity Federation and is an expert member of the Obesity Recommendations Group of the same committee. She is an active member of the Executive Committee of the Lebanese Society of Endocrinology, Diabetes & Lipids.
Dr Barake’s research interests are namely in the fields of obesity, bone disorders and pituitary disorders, on which she has published in peer-reviewed journals, including the Journal of Clinical Endocrinology & Metabolism, Pituitary and Endocrine.
