Biography
Prof. Dr. Adel Badr is a highly accomplished Consultant Ophthalmologist and Vitreoretinal Surgeon with over 25 years of extensive clinical, surgical, and academic experience in ophthalmology. He is recognized internationally for his expertise in complex vitreoretinal surgical management, advanced cataract surgery with premium intraocular lens (IOL) implantation and refractive vision correction procedures, including Femto-LASIK, ReLEx SMILE, Trans-PRK, and Implantable Collamer Lens (ICL) implantation.
As a retinal specialist, Dr. Badr has extensive experience in managing complex vitreoretinal diseases such as proliferative diabetic retinopathy, retinal detachment, macular holes, and diabetic macular edema. He also has significant experience in the diagnosis and management of Retinopathy of Prematurity (ROP)
Dr. Badr began his medical career in Egypt, where he completed his ophthalmology residency training (2000–2004) at the Research Institute of Ophthalmology (RIO), the largest tertiary eye hospital and national referral center in Egypt. During this period, he gained broad experience in comprehensive ophthalmic assessment, emergency ophthalmology, cataract surgery, glaucoma procedures, refractive surgery, and assisted vitreoretinal surgical cases.
Following his residency, Dr. Badr pursued advanced subspecialty training in vitreoretinal surgery by completing a prestigious Surgical Retina Fellowship at Bascom Palmer Eye Institute, Miami, Florida, USA one of the world’s leading centers for ophthalmic education and research. This advanced fellowship further strengthened his expertise in modern retinal microsurgery and evidence-based retinal disease management.
In parallel with his international training, Dr. Badr was appointed as a Lecturer of Ophthalmology at the Faculty of Medicine, MUST University (Misr University for Science and Technology), Cairo, Egypt. In this role, he has played a significant academic and educational role, teaching undergraduate medical students, mentoring residents, supervising clinical and surgical training programs, managing ophthalmology outpatient services, and actively contributing to academic research and continuous medical education.
Dr. Badr continued his international career development through advanced subspecialty exposure and retina research. He completed a Research Retina Fellowship at St. Michael’s Hospital, University of Toronto, Ontario, Canada (2013-2016), strengthening his academic research background and further refining his expertise in evidence-based retinal disease management and modern clinical research.
From 2016 to 2025, Prof. Dr. Adel Badr has held a senior leadership position at Dr. Sulaiman AL Habib Hospital, Dubai, UAE, serving as Consultant Ophthalmic surgeon, as well as Head of the Ophthalmology Department. In this capacity, he has performed thousands of successful procedures using the latest ophthalmic technologies.
Throughout his career, Dr. Badr has performed thousands of successful ophthalmic surgeries, combining the latest surgical technologies with a strong commitment to precision, safety, and patient-centered outcomes. His professional journey includes senior consultant and leadership positions at prestigious ophthalmology centers and hospitals across the UAE, Saudi Arabia, Egypt, Canada, and the United States, reflecting his international recognition and diverse clinical exposure.
Alongside his international clinical leadership roles, Prof. Dr. Badr holds the academic title of Professor of Ophthalmology at The Authority of Teaching Hospitals and Institutes, Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research, Egypt, reflecting his long-standing contributions to postgraduate education, academic supervision, and the development of ophthalmology training programs.
Prof. Dr. Adel Badr’s qualifications include a Master’s Degree in Ophthalmology from Cairo University, Egypt, Fellowship of the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Glasgow (UK), and Fellowship of the International Council of Ophthalmology in Geneva, Switzerland.
