Biologic Infusion Therapy

At CMC Hospital Dubai we are experts in the latest rheumatology treatments including biologics infusion therapy. Biologic infusion therapy involves administering drugs intravenously via infusion that target specific proteins in the immune system that are responsible for inflammation. Biologic drugs are made from living cells and are designed to mimic the function of proteins that are naturally found in the body.

  Overview

What rheumatology conditions does biologic infusion therapy treat?

Biologic infusion therapy is commonly used to treat rheumatoid arthritis, psoriatic arthritis, ankylosing spondylitis, and other autoimmune diseases. These conditions occur when the immune system mistakenly attacks the body’s own tissues, causing inflammation, pain, and joint damage. Biologic drugs work by suppressing the activity of specific proteins that cause this inflammation.

Types of Biologics

TNF (Tumor Necrosis Factor) Inhibitors

One of the most common biologic drugs used for rheumatology diseases is called a tumor necrosis factor (TNF) inhibitor. TNF is a protein that plays a key role in inflammation, and TNF inhibitors work by blocking its activity.

Other biologic categories include Interleukin-6 (IL-6) inhibitors, Interleukin-17 (IL-17) inhibitors, B-cell inhibitors, T-cell inhibitors and Janus kinase (JAK) inhibitors

Biologics Infusion Therapy – Procedure

Before starting biologic infusion therapy, patients will undergo a thorough evaluation with our Rheumatologist to determine if they are a good candidate for this type of treatment. This will typically include blood tests, imaging studies, and a review of the patient’s medical history.

During the infusion, patients will be closely monitored for any signs of adverse reactions, such as an allergic reaction or infection. Patients may also experience side effects, such as headache, nausea, or fatigue. However, serious side effects are rare.

Biologic infusion therapy can be an effective treatment for rheumatology diseases, and many patients experience significant improvements in their symptoms and quality of life.
