Overview
The most common autoimmune rheumatology diseases are:
- Rheumatoid arthritis (RA),
- Systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE)
- Ankylosing spondylitis (AS)
- Psoriatic arthritis (PsA)
- Sjögren’s syndrome (SS)
Rheumatoid arthritis – This is a chronic inflammatory condition that affects the joints. It occurs when the immune system mistakes the joint tissue for a foreign invader, triggering inflammation that damages the joint and the surrounding tissue. RA is characterized by pain, swelling, and stiffness in the joints, frequently affecting the hands and feet.
Systemic lupus erythematosus – This is a complex autoimmune disorder that can affect multiple organ systems. It often manifests in the form of rashes, fatigue, fever, joint pain, and anemia. It can also affect the heart, lungs, and brain.
Ankylosing spondylitis – This is a form of arthritis that affects the spine. It causes inflammation and stiffness in the back and neck, resulting in severe pain and disability.
Psoriatic arthritis – This affects people with psoriasis, a chronic skin disorder. It is characterized by joint pain, stiffness, and swelling, which can lead to joint deformity and disability.
Sjögren’s syndrome – This is an autoimmune disorder characterized by dry eyes and dry mouth. It can also affect other organs, including the lungs and kidneys.
Treatment for Autoimmune Rheumatology Diseases
Treatment usually involves medications to reduce inflammation and suppress the immune system. Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) are the most commonly prescribed medications. These drugs help reduce joint pain and swelling by blocking the production of substances that trigger inflammation.
Other medications that may be used to treat autoimmune rheumatology diseases include disease-modifying antirheumatic drugs (DMARDs), biologics, corticosteroids, and hydroxychloroquine.
In addition to medications, lifestyle modifications can help reduce symptoms and improve quality of life. Exercise helps reduce joint pain and stiffness, while eating a healthy diet can help reduce inflammation and promote overall health. Rest and relaxation are also important, as overexertion can worsen symptoms.
