Preparation for Adrenalectomy
Prior to the Adrenalectomy procedure you will be given instructions to follow for the days prior. This may include stopping usage of certain medications, avoiding food and water the day before the surgery etc.
Adrenalectomy Procedure
Laparoscopic adrenalectomy: In this procedure, the surgeon makes a few small incisions and performs a minimally invasive procedure. The method uses a thin tube equipped with a tiny video camera and a laparoscope. When using this, the doctor can see the inside of the body.
A laparoscopic adrenalectomy leaves smaller scars, causes minimal pain, and carries fewer risks than an open adrenalectomy.
Robotic adrenalectomy: This is an advanced laparoscopic surgery that is robot assisted. The robot allows our surgeons to perform even more complex surgeries with even less pain and incisions vs traditional laparoscopic surgery.
Open Adrenalectomy: Here the surgeon may use open surgery if the tumor is large or might be cancerous. He/she makes an open incision in the abdomen to remove the glands.
Note that robotic surgery uses the same incisions but uses wristed rather rigid instruments.
Post-Op Guidelines After an Adrenalectomy
- The patient can eat her usual diet if it doesn’t upset her stomach, and drink plenty of water
- He/she should rest to allow the area to heal
- Should hold a pillow over the incisions when coughing or taking deep breaths
- To wash and care for the wound(s) as instructed
- The patient is advised to inform his/her doctor if she isn’t having regular bowel movements without straining
