Open-heart surgery is a surgical procedure that involves accessing the heart by making an incision in the chest. It is performed to repair or replace damaged heart valves, treat coronary artery disease, and correct congenital heart defects.

Open-Heart Surgery Procedure

The open-heart surgery procedure involves several steps:

• The patient is put under general anesthesia
• The surgeon makes an incision in the chest to access the heart. We may use a heart-lung bypass machine to temporarily take over the heart’s function and maintain blood flow to the body while the surgery is being performed.
• Once the heart is exposed, the surgeon can perform the necessary repairs or replacements. After the procedure is complete, the surgeon closes the chest incision and the patient is taken to the recovery room.
